MEPs today took a small step towards curbing the impact of aviation on our climate, by voting for it to be included in the EU’s Emission Trading Scheme. Member states colluded with the industry to seriously water down proposals, but the Parliament stuck to its guns both on a target for reducing CO2 emissions and on the need for measures to reduce other greenhouse gases. We need to do much more, much sooner, but at least we are, at last, heading in the right direction.
