27,000 secret prisoners

I met today with a representative of Reprieve, an organisation carrying out incredibly valuable legal and campaign work connected to the death penalty, renditions, torture and the remaining detainees at Guantanamo Bay. I was particularly shocked to learn that there are an estimated 27,000 people held in secret prisons around the world - an increase of 50% compared to figures from just a year ago, with each and every one known about by the US authorities. As the British press is dominated by news about Barak Obama’s Presidential bid, it is sobering to realise the extent of what he will be called upon to tackle if elected later this year.
