Addressing anti-NHS propaganda in the US healthcare debate

The debate over President Obama’s valiant attempt to reform US healthcare continues to rage. Whether or not Obama can push through new legislation on universal healthcare is largely viewed as a test of the President’s power and ability in office, and some are beginning to doubt that he can hold his nerve and do what is right in the face of furious opposition. Sadly, the level of debate on the issue has been lowered, almost destabilised, by right wing media pundits and anti-reform commentators shamelessly wheeling out untruths about the NHS. It is crucial that the American people know when they are being lied to by those with vested interests in maintaining the status quo.

I have signed a letter to be sent to Senator Kerry for use as ammunition in his case for healthcare reform. Written by NHS professionals and patients, it addresses head-on some of the myths that have been perpetuated about the UK’s healthcare system. Whilst no one would pretend that the NHS is perfect, it remains a cornerstone of our welfare state and should be protected from the forces of privatisation at any cost. There are surely few people in the UK who would argue that the level of care you receive when you are sick should depend on the price you can afford to pay. You can read the letter here.
