Peace & Anti-Nuclear

Peace & Anti-Nuclear

As a Green Party MEP, Caroline Lucas prioritises the needs of people and planet over the interests of governments and big business – and that means working for peace and security. She has marched for peace and played a prominent role in taking direct action for peace and against nuclear weapons.

Caroline has been one of the leading lights of the UK’s anti-war movement, undertaking fact-finding peace missions to Iraq - just weeks before the start of the illegal and immoral invasion – and to Israel and Palestine, where she witnessed the construction of the so-called ‘security wall’ and joined EU monitors observing the January 2005 Palestinian Presidential election. She is a Co-President of the cross-party Peace Initiatives Intergroup in the European Parliament . As an MEP she has been able to demand answers and action from the British Government, ensure existing legislation is respected, and promote the European Union’s role as a force for peace both within and beyond its borders.

Caroline also has a long history of opposing nuclear weapons at both local and European levels. She has been involved with the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament for many years, and was an active member of the Snowball Campaign against the US bases. She has spoken at numerous rallies against nuclear weapons and taken part in the march to Aldermaston Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE), calling for nuclear disarmament. She has also been arrested during a peaceful blockade of the Trident nuclear submarine base in Scotland.
