Animal Rights

Defending animal rights and improving animal welfare are central to Caroline Lucas’s work as an MEP. There are many activities within the EU that affect animal rights, so when Caroline was first elected in 1999, she saw it as an opportunity to make changes for the better. As the newly appointed President of the European Parliament’s animal welfare committee, Caroline is in an excellent position to influence key proposals from the European Commission. With your support, she could do more.

In 2006, her work was recognised by the RSPCA, of which she is a Vice-President . She received the Michael Kay Award  for outstanding contribution to European animal welfare from the RSPCA Director General Jackie Ballard, who said: “Caroline has made defending animal rights and improving animal welfare central to her work as an MEP, ensuring that animal protection issues are high on the agenda.”  Read more…

Since 2007, Caroline and animal protection groups across Europe have been working on a huge campaign for the EU to replace ‘cruel, unnecessary and misleading’ animal experiments. The current law governing animal experiments is 20 years old and is now undergoing a review, which means that MEPs have a crucial opportunity to replace animal experiments with more ethical and scientifically reliable non-animal research techniques. Caroline and thousands of others signed a petition to the Parliament launched by the Dr Hadwen Trust for Humane Research in 2008. It reached out across Europe in 11 languages and was supported by animal groups across the continent.

Below you can read copies of correspondence and press releases about animal protection, download Caroline’s occasional animal welfare newsletter, Making Tracks, and learn more about her work to end animal cruelty across Europe.
