Animal Rights

Defending animal rights and improving animal welfare are central to Caroline Lucas’s work as an MEP. There are many activities within the EU that affect animal rights, so when Caroline was first elected in 1999 she saw it as an opportunity to make changes for the better. As Vice-President of the European Parliament’s animal welfare committee, Caroline has achieved a considerable amount in influencing proposals from the European Commission, and with your support, could do more.

In 2006, her work was recognised by the RSPCA, of which she is a Vice-President . The Michael Kay Award  for outstanding contribution to European animal welfare was presented to Caroline by the RSPCA Director General Jackie Ballard, who said: “Caroline has made defending animal rights and improving animal welfare central as her work as an MEP, ensuring that animal protection issues are high on the agenda.”  Read more…

Since 2007, Caroline and animal protection groups across Europe have been working on a huge campaign for the EU to replace ‘cruel, unnecessary and misleading’ animal experiments. The current law  law governing animal experiments is 20 years old so is undergoing a review, and MEPs have the opportunity to to replace animal experiments with more ethical and scientifically reliable non-animal research techniques. You can join Caroline and thousands of others in signing a petition to the Parliament launched by the Dr Hadwen Trust for Humane Research before May 6th 2008. Reaching out across Europe in 11 languages, the petition is supported by animal groups across the continent.
